key notes
What is βLikelyβ?
- βLikelyβ means what may happen.
- We use it to guess or predict something.
π More Likely π
- Something is more likely if it has a higher chance to happen.
- It happens more often.
Examples:
- A bag has 8 red balls and 2 blue balls β picking red is more likely.
- It is more likely to see the sun in the daytime.
π Less Likely π
- Something is less likely if it has a lower chance to happen.
- It happens less often.
Examples:
- A bag has 1 green ball and 9 yellow balls β picking green is less likely.
- It is less likely to see a rainbow every day.
βοΈ Equally Likely π
- Things are equally likely if they have the same chance.
- They can happen equally often.
Examples:
- A bag has 5 red balls and 5 blue balls β both are equally likely.
- Tossing a coin β heads or tails are equally likely.
π§ Easy Tips for Students
- More items = More likely
- Fewer items = Less likely
- Same number = Equally likely
π² Fun Activity Idea
- Put different colored beads in a cup.
- Ask students to guess which color is more, less, or equally likely before picking.
Learn with an example
π°οΈOn which colour is the spinner less likely to land?

- white
- pink
- Look at the spinner. The pink part is smaller than the white part.
- Less of the spinner is pink than is white. The spinner is less likely to land on pink.
π°οΈOn which colour is the spinner more likely to land?

- white
- green
- Look at the spinner. The green part is larger than the white part.
- More of the spinner is green than is white. The spinner is more likely to land on green.
π°οΈIf you select a marble without looking, which colour are you less likely to pick?

- black
- green
- First, count the black marbles. There is 1 black marble.
- Next, count the green marbles. There are 3 green marbles.
- There are fewer black marbles. You are less likely to pick black.
