Growing patterns
kEY NOTES :
Definition of Growing Patterns
- A growing pattern is a sequence that increases or changes in a specific way as it progresses.
- Examples include adding more objects, increasing sizes, or repeating actions in larger numbers.
Identifying Growing Patterns
Look for a rule that describes how the pattern grows (e.g., “add 1 block each time” or “double the number”).
Examples:
- 1 apple, 2 apples, 3 apples (adding 1 apple each time).
- 1 square, 2 squares, 4 squares (doubling the number of squares).
Explaining the Pattern Rule
Ask questions like:
- What changes in the pattern?
- How much is being added or multiplied?
Completing Growing Patterns
- Provide the next item(s) based on the observed rule.
- Example: If the pattern is 2, 4, 6, __, __, the next numbers are 8, 10.
Creating Growing Patterns
- Encourage students to create their own patterns using objects or drawings.
- Example: Start with one triangle, then add one more triangle each time.
