key notes
What is a Tally Chart?
- A tally chart is used to count and record numbers.
- We use tally marks (lines) to show counting.
- Each tally mark = 1 item.
✋ Rules of Tally Marks
- Draw one line for each item: |
- After 4 lines, the 5th line crosses them: (||||)
- This group makes counting easy and fast.
👉 Example:
- 1 = |
- 2 = ||
- 3 = |||
- 4 = ||||
- 5 = |||| (with a cross line)
✅ How to Find the Correct Tally Chart
- Count the total number of items.
- Check the tally marks carefully.
- Make sure every 5th mark is crossed.
- The number of tally marks must match the total items.
🔍 Example
4
- If there are 7 apples:
- Correct tally = |||| + ||
- If tally shows wrong grouping or wrong number → ❌ Incorrect chart
🚫 Common Mistakes
- Forgetting the cross line at 5
- Counting tally marks incorrectly
- Writing too many or too few lines
