Subtraction sentences using number lines – numbers up to 10

🔢 What is a number line?
- A number line is a straight line with numbers in order.
- It helps us count, add, and subtract easily.
👉 Example: 0 — 1 — 2 — 3 — 4 — 5 — 6 — 7 — 8 — 9 — 10
➖ What is subtraction?
- Subtraction means taking away.
- We start with a big number and take away a smaller number.
👉 Example: 7 − 3 = 4
👉 How to subtract using a number line?
- Start at the first number.
- Hop backward (move left) for how many you are subtracting.
- Where you land is the answer!
🐰 Hopping Backwards Rule
- Every “hop” to the left means subtract 1.
- Make small jumps so counting is easy.
Example:
Start at 8, make 2 hops back → land on 6
So, 8 − 2 = 6
🎯 Subtraction Sentence
A subtraction sentence has three parts:
- Start number
- Minus number
- Answer
Example:
9 − 4 = 5
🌈 Use numbers only up to 10
- All subtraction problems will use numbers from 0 to 10.
- Answers will also be between 0 and 10.
