Add a multiple of ten
Key notes :
π’ What is a Multiple of Ten?
- Numbers like 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90
- They all end with 0 β‘οΈ 10, 20, 30β¦
β Adding a Multiple of Ten
- When you add a multiple of ten, only the tens place changes π
- The ones place stays the same! π
Example:
24 + 20 = 44
(2 tens + 2 tens = 4 tens, ones stay same)
π Use Tens Blocks to Add
- Think of tens rods β each rod = 10
- To add 30, add 3 tens rods
- To add 50, add 5 tens rods
π― Add Without Counting One by One
- Donβt count forward by ones
- Jump by tens!
Example:
Start at 35
Jump +10 β 45
Jump +10 β 55
(So, 35 + 20 = 55)
π Adding Zero
- If you add 0 tens (0) the number stays the same π€
Example:
48 + 0 = 48
π§ Adding Big Tens is Easy!
- Just add the tens:
Example:
16 + 30 β 1 ten + 3 tens = 4 tens β 46
π Real-Life Example
- You have 20 stickers and your friend gives you 10 more
- Total = 30 stickers π€©
Learn with an example
βοΈAdd: 23 + 20 =
- First, write the problem vertically:
- 23 + 20
- Add the ones. Add 3 + 0.
- 23 + 20= 3
- Add the tens. Add 2 + 2.
- 23 + 20 = 43
- The sum is 43.
βοΈAdd: 10 + 70 =
- Notice that both numbers have 1 zero at the end. When the number of zeros is the same, it is easy to add. First, arrange the numbers one above the other:
- 10 + 70
- Next, add the zeros. Wherever there is a zero below another zero, place a zero at the bottom. This is because zero plus zero equals zero.
- 10 + 70 = 0
- Now add the remaining digits. One plus seven is eight.
- 10 + 70 = 80
βοΈAdd: 20 + 24 =
- First, write the problem vertically:
- 20 + 24
- Add the ones. Add 0 + 4.
- 20 + 24 = 4
- Add the tens. Add 2 + 2.
- 20 + 24 = 44
- The sum is 44.
