Key Notes :
When a vowel comes before just consonants, the vowel usually does not say its name. It makes a short vowel sound instead.
The short a sound (/ă/) is in the words cat and axe.
The short e sound (/ĕ/) is in the words net and elf.
The short i sound (/ĭ/) is in the words pig and in.
The short o sound (/ŏ/) is in the words pot and on.
The short u sound (/ŭ/) is in the words sun and up.
