| What are Prefixes? |
A prefix is a group of letters added to the beginning of a word.
It changes the meaning of the word.
Example:
- un + happy = unhappy (not happy)
- re + play = replay (play again)
| What are Suffixes? |
A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word.
It changes the word’s meaning or how it is used.
Example:
- help + ful = helpful (full of help)
- care + less = careless (without care)
| Common Prefixes for Grade 1 |
- un- = not (unhappy, unsafe)
- re- = again (redo, replay)
| Common Suffixes for Grade 1 |
- -s = more than one (cats, dogs)
- -ed = past action (played, jumped)
- -ing = happening now (playing, running)
- -ful = full of (joyful, helpful)
- -less = without (hopeless, careless)
