Addition means putting two or more numbers together to find out how many you have in all.

A number line is a straight line with numbers in order. We use it to help us count and solve math problems.

Example of a number line:
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

  1. Start at the first number:
    Find the first number in your addition sentence on the number line.
  2. Jump forward:
    Count forward by the second number. Each jump is one step.
  3. Where you land is the answer!

3 + 4 = ?

  • Start at 3 on the number line.
  • Make 4 jumps forward: 4, 5, 6, 7.
  • You land on 7.

So, 3 + 4 = 7

2 + 5 = ?

  • Start at 2.
  • Jump forward 5 times: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
  • You land on 7.

So, 2 + 5 = 7

Try these on your own using a number line:

  1. 1 + 6 = ___
  2. 4 + 3 = ___
  3. 5 + 2 = ___
  4. 0 + 8 = ___
  5. 6 + 4 = ___
  • Use your finger or a pencil to help you jump on the number line.
  • Always start at the first number.
  • Count each jump carefully.


  • 0 + 4 = 4
  • 1 + 6 = 7
  • 1 + 4 = 5
  • 1 + 5 = 6
  • Start at 1 and count on 4. The result is 5.
