What is Addition?

Addition means putting things together to find out how many there are in total.

Addition Sentences

An addition sentence uses numbers and the plus (+) and equals (=) signs.
Example: 3 + 2 = 5

Parts of an Addition Sentence:
  • The numbers you add are called addends.
  • The answer is called the sum.

Example:

  • 4 + 3 = 7
  • (4 and 3 are addends. 7 is the sum.)

Sums Up to 10
Let’s practice addition sentences where the answer (sum) is 10 or less.

Examples:
  • 1 + 2 = 3
  • 2 + 5 = 7
  • 4 + 4 = 8
  • 6 + 3 = 9
  • 5 + 5 = 10
