Concepts

Digits and Numbers:

  • A digit is a single numerical symbol (0-9).
  • A number is composed of one or more digits.

Place Value of Ones:

    • Ones place: The rightmost digit in a number.
    • Each digit in the ones place represents a single unit (e.g., in 7, the digit 7 represents seven ones).

    Place Value of Tens:

    • Tens place: The second digit from the right.
    • Each digit in the tens place represents ten units (e.g., in 53, the digit 5 in the tens place represents fifty).

    Place Value of Hundreds:

    • Hundreds place: The third digit from the right.
    • Each digit in the hundreds place represents one hundred units (e.g., in 256, the digit 2 in the hundreds place represents two hundred).

    Teaching Tools

    Manipulatives:

    • Base Ten Blocks:
      • Unit cubes: Represent ones.
      • Ten rods: Represent ten ones.
      • Hundred flats: Represent one hundred ones.
