Place value models – tens and ones
class 1: place values ones and tens by Delta publicationsKeynotes :
What is Place Value?
- Place value tells us the value of a digit depending on its place in a number.
- Example: In 23 β 2 is in the tens place (20), 3 is in the ones place (3).
Tens and Ones π
- Tens (π): A group of ten ones.
- Ones (1οΈβ£): Single units.
- Example: 24 = 2 tens (ππ) + 4 ones (1οΈβ£1οΈβ£1οΈβ£1οΈβ£)
How to Model Numbers
- Use blocks, sticks, or drawings to show tens and ones.
- Tens are shown as a long stick or bundle π
- Ones are shown as single dots 1οΈβ£
Building Numbers ποΈ
- Count tens first, then ones to know the total number.
- Example: 36 = 3 tens (πππ) + 6 ones (1οΈβ£1οΈβ£1οΈβ£1οΈβ£1οΈβ£1οΈβ£)
Expanding Numbers β¨
- A number can be written as:
- 47 = 4 tens + 7 ones = 40 + 7
Why Itβs Important π‘
- Helps us read, write, and compare numbers.
- Makes addition and subtraction easier.
Fun Tip π¨
- Draw ten-frames or colored blocks to see tens and ones clearly!
- Use different colors for tens and ones to make it fun.
Learn with an example
