Every number has two places:

Example: In 47,
- 4 is in the โจtens placeโจ โ means 4 tens = 40
- 7 is in the ๐ซones place๐ซ โ means 7 ones = 7
๐งฎ Counting by Tens
- Counting by tens means jumping 10 numbers at a time โก๏ธ
๐ 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 ๐ - Each step adds one ten bundle (๐ of 10 sticks or objects).
๐ชต Counting by Ones
- Counting by ones means going one number at a time โก๏ธ
๐ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 ๐ - Each item is a single one (like 1 stick, 1 bead, or 1 block).
๐งฑ Making Numbers Using Tens and Ones
Numbers up to 99 are made using tens and ones blocks.
- Example: 58 = 5 tens (๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ) + 8 ones (๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ)
๐ฏ Tens and Ones in Words
- 21 โ Two tens and one one
- 34 โ Three tens and four ones
- 90 โ Nine tens and zero ones
๐ฃ Say it as: โTwenty-oneโ, โThirty-fourโ, โNinetyโ
๐งฉ Using Bundles to Count
- 1 bundle of ten sticks = 10
- 2 bundles = 20, 3 bundles = 30, โฆ up to 9 bundles = 90
- Add extra single sticks to show ones.
Example: ๐๐๐ + ๐๐ = 32 (3 tens and 2 ones)
๐จ Fun Tip for Students
๐ก Always count tens first, then ones!
- Example: In 67, count ๐ 6 tens (60) โ 7 ones (7) = 67
๐ง Remember:

- Together they make numbers up to 99! ๐
